Wiwaxy Peak – Scramble East Towers Lake O’Hara Yoho July 31, 2016

Wiwaxy East Peak Towers Yoho Scramble Route

Wiwaxy Peaks East Towers Downclimbing Tower #2

Day One was Yukness , alpine ledge route and Abbot Pass Hut. Day 2 was scramble wiwaxy east peak towers.  Came down from hut and took alpine ledge route from above Lake Oesa and up to Wiwaxy col. Note we bypassed first buttress by angling down and dropping 30 m below it and then up ledges and scree to upper bowl. Cross over a ridge and then traverse left to gully between tower 3 and #2.  Climb moderate scramble over #2 and then down 15m and moderate scramble up #1.  Retrace all this back to first buttress then we went straight down on left side of gully to intersect trail vs going back to col.

Highly recommended if in area. Great views including Huber ledge route.

Lake O’Hara is hard to get into as the buses are always booked and supposedly you can’t even do wait list walk ons. A friend had a cancellation so I was able to squeeze in on a two day trip. Shout out to Matthew Hobbs and Vern for route pics and their trip reports on Wiwaxy East Peak.

Mount Cascade, Banff Scramble July 8, 2016

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Norquay Ski Hill from Cascade Mountain – Traverse on East side of False Summit. This is what you see from Banff to make too much snow go/no go decision.

Mount Cascade Scramble Banff False summit traverse bypass crux – see trail base of rock and red dots on scramble step around at LH side of close end of rock.

Needed rehab/exercise so thought I would go up until it started raining and made it to summit. A few changes since previous times as there has been so much traffic. Section between first summit and traverse is messed up with lots of trails and even the traverse has several partial trails. Very good dry trail(as of yesterday) along the RH and front of the false summit and some red/pink rectangles. Great exercise although my mind had blocked out the talus, the switchbacks and the slog back up from the bridge. Note this is closer to 1600 m with the elev losses and regains.

Snow Peak Kananaskis Oct 18, 2015

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Kevin – summit of Snow Peak

Good trip – recommend as one of the better easy scrambles.  About 20 km and 950 m

Took bikes to 4 km so quick trip, a little muddy on trails but dry from pass on up. went up RH side of ridge on switchback trails on scree.  A couple of easy steps over rockband then walk along summit ridge.

Once below rockband on way down went right into bowl and ran nice easy scree runs that linked up all the way to meadows and then cranked left at first tree back to lower ridge to pass.

Halfway back to pass along lower ridge dropped off ridge at a low point on talus slope on faint trail down into trees and took shortcut down avi slopes/trees back to intersect main hike trail.

Quick with shortcuts, scree runs and bikes as 6.5 hr RT with .5 hrs at top.

Lots of people and dogs up to pass and no sign of bears.

Not much trail on this.  Lots of creek rock, crossings, uphill bushwack and then scree. Not my favorite. Great views of Ishbel as per picture above.
