Mary Barclay June 10/2011

A good short early season training type day. Bike approach from Nakiska road worked well- 6.5 km vs 8.8 km from barrier dam.  I will let Kevin Papke tell this one.  Well our good friend Scott has finally accomplished a goal he set out to 30 yrs ago. Mary Barclay’s Mtn. Early in his illustrious climbing [...]

Healy Pass Feb 5/2011

Note full size pic here Simpson to Sunshine Routes Headed out with Scott and Wietse to do Circuit – Healy Pass to Egypt Lake and out by Red Earth Creek trail. New snow/trail breaking slowed us down a bit and no tracks beyond Healy Pass so we decided to just ski back down Healy creek [...]

Wawa ridge Dec 11, 2010

Tromp up Sunshine ski out with Wietse. These are all Wietse’s pics – Thanks Went to right side of Wolverine chair and then up green run to top of Wawa chair.  Went out the backcountry gate and followed some old trail to ridge highpoint.  The good runs down the front looked thin so we went [...]

Colembolla Oct 1/2010

Trip with Kevin P and Dave S.  This was a plan B or C as we decided not to cross the river for Skogan and we were looking for something that we all had not done given the time, etc.  We drove to Nakiska and walked the service road around the right side of the [...]

Burgess and Walcott

We really did steal a day weather wise as we had good weather and even some sun and yet we drove back through rain at LL and Banff.  Nice to get both peaks and these are really two different scrambles. Walcott (North peak) is listed as an Easy scramble but the scree gully is very [...]

Mount Bell NE Ridge 5.3 (aka E Ridge 5.4)

(Note successfull trip in 2011 – link below) Mount Bell NE Ridge has been in the back of my mind for the last two years because of Gary’s accident August 4, 2008.  He fell while we were on approach to the NE Ridge. He has limited memories from before the head trauma and is a [...]

Ha Ling NE Buttress 5.6

Trad 5.6 rock climb with guide Mark Klassen and Kevin.  Not many good pics as we were concentrating on the climb and I creased the mechanical lens cover on my best small camera last week so had my old small camera.  A good climb with good positions on the rock . Lots of variety of [...]

Mount Stanley North Face July 15/10

Roy, Kevin and I along with guide Mark Klassen and assistant Kris Irwin did the North Face (Kahl route – alpine Grade III) on Thursday.  Solid day as we left the bivy at 2:30AM and were on top by 8 AM.  Good conditions as schrund was easy and only two pitches of easy ice just above the schrund. [...]

Heart Loop July 11/2010

Heart loop was a good training run after being rained out on Sat. Hard to believe Kev has done the first part of Heart 15+ times and had never done the loop. I am impressed at how good the trail is now on the last leg of the loop although the last time I did [...]

Copper Mtn July 1/10

Copper Mtn and the Curious Goat – Copper is probably the least visited of the Banff Kane peaks and there is minimal trail and no cairns until the top.  It has a reputation as a confusing ascent as Dow, Sonny, Gary and Dave Stephens all did not find the easy way up!  Sonny and Gary [...]
